Wolfgang has memorized every room of The Book Loft — all 32 of them — and will happily give you a tour if you have an hour or three. He knows which narrow passage connects the poetry section to the mysteries, where the ceiling dips unexpectedly in Room 14, and which corner catches the afternoon light just right for reading. He considers the maze-like layout one of the great architectural achievements in German Village. He has said this many times. He means it every time.
The pre-Civil War building suits him perfectly: full of history, full of surprises, and impossible to rush through. But if you really want to find Wolfgang, skip the maze and go straight to the outdoor garden. That's his reading spot. That's where he'll be, settled in with something he picked up two rooms back, ready to recommend it to the next devoted reader who wanders out. He always has a recommendation. It's always a good one.
